Earache (otitis media) is an infection of the middle ear that causes pain, inflammation, and sometimes a build-up of fluid behind the eardrum. It is particularly common in young children but can affect anyone.
Common Symptoms
- Pain in one or both ears
- Difficulty hearing or muffled sound
- High temperature (fever)
- Feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
- Irritability and pulling at the ear (in children)
- Fluid discharge from the ear

Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, our qualified pharmacists can assess your earache and provide appropriate treatment without a GP appointment.
- Full clinical assessment of symptoms and medical history
- Examination to determine the type and severity of infection
- Pain relief recommendations (paracetamol or ibuprofen)
- Prescription of antibiotic ear drops or oral antibiotics if clinically needed
- Referral to GP if further investigation is required
