Hay Fever: Best Treatments Available at Your Pharmacy

20 February 2026 · 2 min read · 1 views · By Tanweer Ahmed

Hay fever (allergic rhinitis) affects around 1 in 5 people in the UK. When pollen counts rise, the symptoms — sneezing, itchy eyes, blocked nose, and fatigue — can be truly miserable. The good news is that effective treatments are readily available at your pharmacy without a prescription.

Understanding Your Hay Fever

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen. Different types of pollen are released at different times:

  • Tree pollen — February to June (birch, oak, ash)
  • Grass pollen — May to September (the most common trigger)
  • Weed pollen — June to September (nettles, dock)

Knowing which pollen triggers your symptoms helps you plan when to start treatment. Many people benefit from starting their medication 2-4 weeks before their hay fever season typically begins.

Antihistamine Tablets

Oral antihistamines are the most popular first-line treatment. Modern non-drowsy options include:

  • Cetirizine — Once daily, effective within 1 hour. Good all-round option.
  • Loratadine — Once daily, truly non-drowsy for most people. Suitable during pregnancy (on pharmacist advice).
  • Fexofenadine — Once daily, the newest option. Available over the counter since 2021. Particularly effective for stubborn symptoms.

Nasal Sprays

Nasal sprays target symptoms directly where they occur. They are particularly effective for a blocked or runny nose:

  • Steroid nasal sprays (e.g., beclometasone, fluticasone) — The most effective treatment for nasal symptoms. Use daily throughout the season for best results. Takes a few days to reach full effect.
  • Antihistamine nasal sprays (e.g., azelastine) — Fast-acting relief within 15 minutes. Good for occasional use.
  • Saline sprays — Wash away pollen and soothe irritated nasal passages. No side effects and safe for everyone.

Eye Drops

If itchy, watery eyes are your main complaint, antihistamine eye drops provide targeted relief. Sodium cromoglicate drops are available without prescription and are safe for regular use. For more stubborn symptoms, ask your pharmacist about olopatadine drops.

Self-Help Tips

  • Check the pollen forecast daily and stay indoors when counts are high
  • Shower and change clothes after spending time outdoors
  • Keep windows closed during peak pollen hours (early morning and evening)
  • Wear wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes
  • Apply petroleum jelly around your nostrils to trap pollen
  • Dry laundry indoors during high pollen days
