Blood Pressure: Why Regular Pharmacy Health Checks Matter

20 February 2026 · 2 min read · 2 views · By Tanweer Ahmed

High blood pressure (hypertension) is often called the “silent killer” because it rarely causes symptoms until serious damage has been done. In the UK, around 1 in 3 adults have high blood pressure, and many do not know it. A quick, free check at your pharmacy could be one of the most important health decisions you make.

What Is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure measures the force of blood pushing against your artery walls. It is recorded as two numbers:

  • Systolic (top number) — Pressure when your heart beats and pushes blood out
  • Diastolic (bottom number) — Pressure when your heart rests between beats

Understanding Your Numbers

  • Normal: Below 120/80 mmHg — Healthy range. Continue healthy lifestyle.
  • Elevated: 120-129/less than 80 — At risk. Lifestyle changes recommended.
  • High (Stage 1): 130-139/80-89 — Your GP may recommend monitoring and lifestyle changes.
  • High (Stage 2): 140/90 or higher — Treatment likely needed. See your GP.
  • Crisis: Above 180/120 — Seek immediate medical attention.

Why Does It Matter?

Uncontrolled high blood pressure significantly increases your risk of:

  • Heart attack and heart failure
  • Stroke
  • Kidney disease
  • Vascular dementia
  • Vision problems

The risk increases gradually — even slightly elevated blood pressure over many years can cause damage. Early detection and management dramatically reduces these risks.

Lifestyle Changes That Help

  • Reduce salt intake to less than 6g per day
  • Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Exercise regularly — aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity per week
  • Limit alcohol to 14 units per week
  • Stop smoking
  • Manage stress through relaxation techniques
