Shingles (herpes zoster) is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus in people who have previously had chickenpox. It causes a painful, blistering rash typically on one side of the body.
Common Symptoms
- Painful tingling or burning before the rash appears
- Red blotchy rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters
- Rash on one side of the body (often torso or face)
- Headache and general feeling of being unwell
- Fever
- Sensitivity to light

How We Treat Shingles

- Clinical assessment of rash onset timing
- Prescription of antiviral medication (aciclovir) if within 72 hours of rash onset
- Pain relief recommendations
- Advice on preventing spread to others
- Referral if complications suspected
What You Need to Know
Who Is Eligible
Adults who have had chickenpox are eligible. Treatment is most effective within 72 hours of the rash appearing. No GP referral is needed.
When to Visit
Visit us as soon as the rash appears — timing is critical for antiviral effectiveness. Early treatment significantly reduces severity and duration.
What to Bring
Bring a list of any current medications, your NHS number if possible, and a note of when the rash first appeared. No prescription or GP letter is required.
