Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infections in women. That burning sensation, the constant need to go, the lower abdominal discomfort — it is miserable. Previously, you needed a GP appointment for antibiotics. Now, thanks to Pharmacy First, women aged 16-64 can get treatment directly from their pharmacist.
What Is a UTI?
A urinary tract infection occurs when bacteria enter the urinary system, most commonly affecting the bladder (cystitis). Symptoms include:
- Burning or stinging when you urinate
- Needing to urinate more often than usual
- Feeling an urgent need to go, even when your bladder is empty
- Cloudy, dark, or strong-smelling urine
- Pain or pressure in your lower abdomen
- Feeling generally unwell or tired
How Pharmacy First Helps
Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, your pharmacist can:
- Assess your symptoms — A private consultation to understand your condition
- Confirm a UTI — Using clinical assessment criteria
- Prescribe antibiotics — Usually a 3-day course of nitrofurantoin or trimethoprim
- Provide advice — Self-care tips to prevent recurrence
This is available to women aged 16-64 with uncomplicated, lower urinary tract infections. It is completely free on the NHS.
When to See a GP Instead
Your pharmacist will refer you to a GP if:
- You are pregnant
- You are male (UTIs in men always need GP assessment)
- You are under 16 or over 64
- You have recurrent UTIs (3 or more in 12 months)
- You have blood in your urine
- You have a high fever, back pain, or feel very unwell (possible kidney infection)
- You have diabetes or a weakened immune system
Preventing UTIs
- Drink plenty of water (6-8 glasses per day)
- Go to the toilet as soon as you feel the need — do not hold it
- Wipe from front to back after using the toilet
- Empty your bladder after sexual intercourse
- Avoid perfumed products around the genital area
- Wear cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing
