Meningitis ACWY is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The ACWY vaccine protects against four strains of meningococcal bacteria (A, C, W, and Y). It is strongly recommended for certain groups.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?
The meningitis ACWY vaccine is recommended for the following groups:
- University students — especially those living in halls of residence
- Hajj and Umrah pilgrims — Saudi Arabia requires proof of vaccination
- Travellers to sub-Saharan Africa (meningitis belt)
- Teenagers who missed their NHS school vaccination
- Anyone at increased risk (e.g. no spleen or complement deficiency)
The NHS provides meningitis ACWY vaccine free for teenagers aged 14 and university freshers under 25. For other groups, the vaccine is available privately at our pharmacy.
What You Need to Know
The Vaccine
Single dose providing protection within 7-10 days. Long-lasting immunity suitable from age 2+. No booster needed for most people for up to 5 years.
